Schools In Hawaii: Colleges, Universities & Vocational

When it comes to post-secondary education in Hawaii, there are surprisingly many options for a relatively small U.S. state. Public post-secondary schools include the Hawaii Department of Education adult community schools and the state’s expansive University of Hawaii system. There are also several private colleges and universities to choose from, as well as vocational schools in Hawaii for those students who want to work in certain trades.

To meet representatives from many of the schools listed below — all in one place — attend the annual Hawaii College and Career Fair, which is held every November on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.

DOE Community Schools For Adults

Hawaii’s Department of Education (DOE) operates 11 adult community schools throughout Oahu, the Big Island, Maui, and Kauai. They offer classes that teach remedial reading, writing, and math; life/parenting skills; English language; American Sign Language; and Hawaiian language and culture. They also provide U.S. citizenship classes, substitute teacher training, and a program for earning a high school diploma (participants must be at least 16 years old).

University of Hawaii

The state’s University of Hawaii (UH) system includes 3 universities and 7 community colleges, all of which are accredited by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC). In addition to traditional classroom instruction, each campus offers distance-learning classes, through which certain courses of study can be completed via the Internet, videoconferencing, and cable TV.

Each campus also offers its own continuing education (CE) program, in which nontraditional students (working professionals, older adults returning to college, visiting international students, etc.) can take credit and noncredit courses during the evening, on weekends, and during summer. CE departments also offer special programs such as travel-study, intensive English-language instruction, classes for senior citizens, vocational training and recertification courses, apprenticeships, youth summer classes, and more.

Private Colleges, Universities & Vocational Schools In Hawaii

If you decide to attend a private post-secondary school instead of the UH system, you’ll still have plenty of options to choose from. Before you enroll in a private colleges or university, make sure it’s accredited by an accrediting agency that’s recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Otherwise, you’ll graduate with a degree that prospective employers might consider invalid.

If you’re interested in attending a vocational school, ask if it’s licensed by the state of Hawaii (either by the DOE or the DDCA — the Department of Commerce & Consumer Affairs). Most vocational schools prepare students to sit for a state licensing or state certification exam in a certain trade. If you are interested in sitting for a national licensing/certification exam, you may need to complete coursework beyond what the vocational school’s program offers. Check with the school to find out if their program leads to state licensing/certification or national licensing/certification. Some schools offer programs that satisfy requirements for both.
